It only seems like a few weeks ago since last year’s festivities, but the Patronal weekend was soon upon us. On Friday 20th, St Matthew’s hosted the fifth Catholic Evangelism Lecture ran by the Diocese and the Church Union. It was great to have the Bishop of Sheffield with us to welcome and introduce the lecture and the speaker, The Venerable Luke Miller, Archdeacon of London.
People from near and far came together on Saturday lunchtime to attend the Patronal Mass at 12noon. Fr Luke was the guest preacher, and the augmented choir sang Mozart’s Spatzenmesse and an anthem by Cavalli accompanied by strings. The Mass was followed by a procession of the Blessed Sacrament up Division Street to Devonshire Green with Benediction. Many onlookers and shoppers watched in awe at the unusual sight of a large crowd of people singing hymns in the middle of a busy Sheffield street accompanied by a brass band – a great act of witness! A number of passers-by were able to join us afterwards as we headed back to the Church where Benediction was given again, followed by a superb buffet.
Thank you to all those who were involved in helping this weekend run smoothly.
A special thank you to Kinder Kalsi for capturing some of the beautiful moments of the day.
